Hexham Juniors FC Whites Under 9's are one of the few teams from Tynedale to kick a ball in anger over the last month. In between Christmas and New Year (Tuesday 28th December) they played in the Complete Football Christmas Tournament at Gosforth Park.
The team has had a magnificent year going into the tournament unbeaten since 6th December 2009, nearly 13 months.
Having not played or trained since beating Wylam Rockets Locomotive 9-0 on the 20th of November, the team were more than a bit rusty.
Their first game in the group stages of the tournament was against Red House Farm. The game started at a brisk pace and within minutes of the kick-off disaster struck for Hexham as their top goal scorer Calum Armstrong (with 14 goals from 7 games so far this season) took a heavy tackle and limped off the pitch. The strong defence of Tom Dasilva and Finlay Baty kept Red House at bay and the 10 minute long game ended all square at 0-0.
The second game was against KYPC Galaxy. This was much the same as the first this time with Tom Watson partnering Baty in defence to keep another clean sheet. The attack force of the non-stop running Robert Singer and the teams 2nd top goal scorer William Scott (with 10 goals from 7) couldn't find the back of the net and the game ended in another 0-0 draw.
Cramlington Juniors were next up. This was a very tight game with Cramlington taking the lead early on. Hexham who have came from behind to win twice and draw once so far this season dug in deep. The midfield players of Steven Heslop, Oliver Fairless and William Kellas worked tirelessly and it eventually paid-off. Steven Heslop finding the net from a powerful shot from outside the box. This levelled the score and the game ended 1-1.
Newcastle City were their next opponents, with the winters late afternoon temperature dropping and the light fading the floodlights were switched on. The Hexham boys started the game slowly not getting into the pace of the game and going behind by 2 quick goals. It was all hand to the pumps for the rest of the game but Hexham were unable to get out of their own half and their goal mouth was reminiscent of the Alamo. When it was over the Hexham boys knew what they had to aspire to, with Newcastle City winning 5-0 and Hexham bowing out of the tournament.
With the disappointment of the defeat now behind them Hexham Whites still have completed an excellent record, going unbeaten for more than a year with 14 wins and 8 draws in all games played.
Their Manager and Coach Joe Watson said "the boys can be proud of themselves for what they have achieved, not many teams can boast their fantastic record".
Hexham Whites are still the only team unbeaten in Division 2 of the Tyne Valley Insurance league this season and are looking forward to playing the top of the table boys from Wylam Rockets Dynamos on Saturday.
Congratulation to Robert Dunn and Jordan Dodwell who have progressed through the club ranks and are now appearing as match officials. The senior team have had Rob appointed on three occasions already this season and at last Wednesday’s match against Wallsend BC (30/3/10) Jordan joined him on the opposite touch line. This was Jordan’s first game as he is part of our under 16 Whites squad. Both lads did really well in what proved a very close match. This is how the Club is progressing and shows all our young members (Girls & boys) there is a chance to progress both as a official and a player

Jack Charlton showed the adults a thing or two in this year’s Premier Fantasy Football competition. Jack from the under 14 squad managed his team to a three point victory in very close contest which changed leaders several times over the season. Jack received the winner’s trophy at the club’s annual presentation event at QEHS on 18th June
Ex Hexham Junior Shaun Vipond has made in back into a Green & White Shirt but its stripes this time not hoops. Shaun has just signed for Blyth Spartans in the Blue Square Conference North . Best of luck to Shaun with his new club and he better expect a few familiar faces in the crowd at Croft Park to see how he gets on
It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from - if you are around 10 years old then there is absolutely nothing in life that is better than a game of football. This was undoubtedly proved this week when a couple of 10 year old boys from Belarus proudly captained two teams made up of Hexham FC’s under 11 squad in a friendly match, organised by the team coaches Andy and Stephen Turnbull, at the clubs brand new Dukeshouse Wood facility. The two captains, Ura and Dima, are staying with the family of Patrick Lally, one of the Hexham FC players, as part of a visit arranged by the Chernobyl Children’s Life Line http://www.ccll.org.uk.
This is a charity founded in 1991 to support children and their families, mainly in Belarus, who suffered the majority of the radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear explosion.
Since 1992 some 43,000 children from Belarus have had the chance to stay with families in the UK for a month and this year 10 girls and 2 boys have spent the past few weeks in Tynedale - something that Doctors in Belarus believe will add years to their life expectancy.
Hexham FC kindly donated a full strip to each of the boys to allow them to fully take part in a thrilling end to end match which ultimately finished 5 apiece and had to go to a penalty shoot out! The huge grins showed just how delighted the boys were with their new green and white kit and they each had to be strongly persuaded not to sleep in it later on that evening.
The players were cheered on by some of the visiting girls who chose not to play but preferred to watch from the touch line until the post match hot dogs were ready! In the fabulous new club house, Dave and Angela Roberts, from Roberts and Partners, presented each of the Belarusian children with a goody bag of sports kit and treats ensuring that everyone went home with smiling faces. If anybody would like to become a host family next year please contact the charity through their website http://www.ccll.org.uk.
